Illusion or reality? It is the eternal question for philosophers, ancient and modern. It is also the burning question for Justin Moore is faith simply delusion? Justin, a middle-aged Catholic priest just returned from his parish in the Caribbean, ponders the question. From his hospital bed he reflects on his life and on a faith, so sure and seemingly indestructible, that had guided that life. His loss of faith was not a simple movement in one direction; from belief to unbelief; faith to reason; theism to atheism. The more convincing his doubts became, the more events related to his ministry seemed to be calling him back to the faith he was slowly abandoning. The tension arising from this conflict between faith and reason or faith and fact eventually became critical, and he returned to Ireland of the 1980s an emotional wreck; his life's compass all awry, he was unable to see his way forward. One day, Justin wakes to the strains of one of Richard Strauss's Four Last Songs to find a new patient sharing his ward. Adam, a young man in his early twenties, suffering from depression, is barely conscious of his surroundings, but his mere physical presence forces Justin to reflect on his own sexuality. Later, Adam has a visitor in the person of his friend, Rick; a young man of challenging openness, who informs Justin that he and Adam are gay. Hostility is Justin's immediate reaction to Rick's admission; but is that resentment directed at Rick because of his readiness to admit what Justin himself is hesitant to acknowledge? However, Justin soon begins to admire Rick's openness, and discovers a charming, vibrant and passionate friend in Rick that helps Justin to accept himself as he is and acknowledge that even without faith his life might yet have a meaningful future. In the weeks and months that follow, Justin meets many of Rick's friends. He also quiet unexpectedly meets some of his former friends and colleagues, all of which, in their respective ways, provide markers for his way forward. But he also finds that his new life is not without its losses.

Seamus Langan's novel Four Last Songs is a great story and more. The novel follows a year in the life of Jason, an ex-priest, who having resolved doubts about faith in a rejection of organisied religion, embarks on a new life of discovery. The people whom he meets in his new life, particularly the charismatic, daring, frank, humourous and provocative Rick challenge him to confront the baggage of his former life and his identity as a gay man.
Mr. Langan is a born story-teller. Through a carefully crafted work containing flashbacks, interconnections between past and present and sub-plots he keeps you wanting to turn the page to see how the story is going to unfold.
At the same time the novel is provocative. It is written with a depth of sensitivity and insights from theology, humanism, existentialism and modern science that challenge the reader to reflect on my things, organised religion included, that we take for granted.
It is a book that I enjoyed very much and will take up to read again very soon.
